Helen Zia’s most recent book, Last Boat Out of Shanghai, places the refugee exodus following China’s 1949 Communist revolution in a distinctly personal light as she follows four real individuals from their childhoods through war and enemy occupation, civil war and social chaos, exodus and relocation to distant refuges, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and the U.S. As the daughter of Chinese immigrants, Zia uses her experiences and research into the crisis to tell a unique yet universal story of family and survival. Zia, an award-winning journalist and Fulbright scholar, spent more than twelve years working on Last Boat Out of Shanghai. Join Zia in conversation with Alice Mong, the executive director of the Asia Society Hong Kong.
