What compels an individual to leave behind a promising career in investment banking to work in conflict areas? Jason Yip, one of the first Hong Kongers at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to be hired as an on-the-ground delegate, has been dispatched to conflict zones around the world, including Palestine, Afghanistan, Jordan, Syria and Myanmar. With unwavering belief in the value of humanitarian work in a world of tension, he upholds the ICRC’s mission – protecting civilians during fighting, helping locate those separated from families and assisting in rebuilding a post-war infrastructure. Mr. Yip has been involved in numerous life-threatening scenarios: he engaged with the Taliban in Afghanistan for the release of kidnapped school children and their teachers, worked in emergency relief – such as the Sichuan earthquake in 2008 – and delivered letters from prisoners in the mountains of Myanmar to their families. In a dialogue moderated by Mr. Ronnie C. Chan, Mr. Yip will share his personal journey that led him to his current work in humanitarian aid.
