How can higher education prepare learners for their professional lives, when professions themselves are disappearing? Is a “robot-proof” education concerned solely with topping up minds with high-octane facts? Rather, by adopting an experiential learning model, it calibrates them with a creative mindset and mental elasticity to invent, discover or create something valuable to society. A new discipline, humanics, will build on our innate strengths and prepare us to compete in a labor market in which smart machines work alongside human professionals. And, lifelong learning opportunities will support our ability to adapt to change. Joseph E. Aoun, President of Northeastern University, proposes a way to educate the next generation of learners to invent, create and discover, to fill needs in a society that even the most sophisticated artificial intelligence agent cannot.
